The McPherson Outdoor Education Center is an innovative, mulitfaceted outdoor education center that offers a variety of adventure and animal therapy programs including: Therapeutic Horseback Riding; Challenge Ropes Teambuilding Programs; Mobile Farms; Educational Farm Tours; and Cooperative Education Internships.
This program was the inspiration of long time Waterford Country School employee, mentor, teacher, friend, father, husband, animal rehabilitator, farmer, weather prognosticator and visionary, Rick McPherson.
In 1976 Rick joined WCS as a childcare worker and soon advanced to a Vocational Instructor in the Education Department working on the farm. Through hard work and dedication he was quickly promoted to Farm Manager. He left the agency in 1979, only to return Waterford Country School for good in 1982.
In 1994 Rick evolved the “Children’s Farm” to the Experiential Education Center, adding a ropes course, animal sanctuary, and a state and federally licensed wildlife rehabilitation center. In 2010, the farm was renamed and dedicated to Rick McPherson. Rick retired in 2015 leaving a great legacy of inspiration, learning and fun.
