Dear Ron and Tricia,

The time you’ve been in my life has impacted me so much. As parents you have shown me even more. I used to think that I would never deserve love after being thrown away by the ones I considered my family. Yet when I entered your home not only did I learn to feel loved again but how to trust myself to love others. You guys have honestly taught me how to believe in something called family again, and more importantly, a home. It may have taken some bumps in the road and stressed out incidents but by the end of every day I am so grateful to have a bed to lie in, in my own room, where I finally feel welcome and for once… loved. Does love know no color?

The ad campaign for Kevin Costner’s new film Black or White definitely supports that idea, pushing the hashtag #LoveKnowsNoColor while promoting the transracial custody drama.

Black or White pits a child’s white maternal grandfather (Costner) against her black paternal grandmother (played by Octavia Spencer) in a legal battle for custody. Think Losing Isaiah meets The Blind Side, dealing with the matter of white parents raising black or biracial children. In both those films, as in Black or White, the main focus seems to be on the adults in the room, fighting over the future and well-being of a child of color. But what of the children put in this situation, raised by white families? (more…)

My husband and I began our journey as foster care parents in 1998.  At first, it was more curiosity than anything; 15 years later I now know that it is a calling.  Foster care is challenging, frustrating, and sometimes heart breaking and yet it is the one of the most rewarding experiences a person could ever have.  Care can be in many different facets; from respite care to adoption and many stages in between.  We choose to pursue long-term care because we want to make a difference in a child’s life. We want to give them a safe home, people they can count on (eventually) and create normalcy in the lives. This is not to say that others that do emergency care are not as important, we just feel that this is where we fit into the puzzle.  We have one biological child, one adopted through the foster care system, a long-term placement (who did not want to be adopted) who is currently in college, and another long-term placement in high-school. On November 17th,  19 year old Jacoby Wright realized his dream. His Facebook post that day shared “Today is the day, no more counting the weeks or days, now, just counting hours….I am truly blessed that my friends and family have shown me what the love of God is and because of that I am able to show others the same…so thank you. Signing off now, wish me luck!”  After working with a Recruiter, taking his ASVAB test and waiting for months, he was finally making the trip to Parris Island, South Carolina for boot camp.
